Hire of Consultant for The Design of Solar Powered Irrigation System

Concern Worldwide in Malawi through the Food Systems for Food Security (FS4FS) is seeking to engage a consultant Individual or Company) to design a solar-powered irrigation scheme at the Madziamwala site in Traditional Authority Kabudula, Lilongwe District. The proposed irrigation scheme will utilize groundwater as the primary water source.

The outcome of this assignment will be to design an gravity fed and solar powered surface irrigation system to service 6.15 hectares. The water source should be from new borehole to be provided as part of the system.

The consultant will be required to design the irrigation system in accordance with recognized international and national standards applicable in Malawi, including FAO surface irrigation design guidelines (Module 7), Malawi Irrigation Code of Practice, Malawi Irrigation Act. 2025 and Malawi Water Resource Regulation 2018.

The selected consultant will be expected and required to:

• Supervise borehole siting
• The successful consultant will be expected to lead and guide the hydrogeological investigations, geophysical surveys, pumping tests, water quality assessments, and yield analysis on completion of the drilling.
• Conduct technical assessment of the proposed site.
• Develop hydraulic design and system layout (including Pipe sizing criteria, Head loss calculations methodology. Minimum pressure requirements at disinbuton points, Pump selecion based on system curves and duty points, and Open channels design criberia
• Prepare engineering drawings and implementation plan. Justily the selected imgation method and demonstrate:
• Expected application efficiency o Uniformity coefficient (285% recommended) o Suitability to crops and soil conditions
• Recommend and conduct an assessment actual works to be carried out.
• Solar system design report with calculations
• Hydraulic calculation report
• Climate risk considerations (dry-year scenario analysis)
• The consultant to provide drawings and details of all designs and proposed construction.

Recommend any structural works to be understood by a suitably qualified structural engineer.

• Total dynamic head (TH) calculations
• Provide proposed designs and detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQ) with materials needed and with estimated cost of the systems.
• Pump duty point analysis
• Solar array sizing calculations
• Seasonal energy balance
• System efficiency assumptions
• Expected daily water production
• Equipment specifications and warranty
• Electrical wiring design, cable sizing and electrical safety provisions

Submission Requirements

• Company registration certificates
• Identity card (national ID/ passport) for individual bidders
• Qualmoations of engineers and all lead technical staff
• Registration with all applicable and professional and regulatory bodies
• Provide evidence of similar project in the past five years, including contact details of clients (Preferably International NGO’s or UN agencies)
