Position Title: Environmental, Social, Health, and Safety (ESHS) Officer
Location: Zomba
Contract Type: Fixed-Term (12 months)
Reporting to: ESHS Expert

About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and qualified Environmental, Social, Health, and Safety (ESHS) Officer to oversee the effective implementation of ESHS measures on our project site in Zomba district. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with environmental and social safeguards, occupational health and safety standards, and community engagement protocols in line with the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework and national regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Responsibilities:
- Monitor and ensure the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP).
- Enforce compliance with waste management, erosion control, dust and noise suppression, and pollution prevention measures.
- Prepare and submit monthly environmental monitoring reports.
- Promote the use of sustainable construction materials and practices
Social Responsibilities:
- Oversee implementation of community health and safety measures.
- Ensure compliance with codes of conduct related to GBV/SEA, child labor, and non-discrimination.
- Manage community engagement activities and grievance redress mechanisms.
- Conduct awareness campaigns on social risks such as HIV/AIDS, GBV, and workers’ rights
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily implementation of occupational health and safety (OHS) protocols.
- Conduct safety audits and toolbox talks.
- Ensure proper use and availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Lead emergency preparedness and incident response actions.
Training and Capacity Building:
- Deliver induction and regular refresher training on ESHS issues in both English and Chichewa.
- Maintain documentation on training attendance, materials, and feedback
Reporting and Documentation:
- Submit weekly field reports and monthly summaries of ESHS compliance.
- Maintain grievance records and their resolution statuses.
- Ensure alignment with national standards and donor requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Environmental Health with 1 year minimum experience
- Proven experience in ESHS implementation in construction or infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of World Bank ESF guidelines and national ESHS regulations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with fluency in both English and Chichewa.
- Ability to conduct training and awareness sessions effectively.
